"This delightful songstress carries with her a delightful treasure chest of charming, melodic, melancholic and mesmerising tunes that wind around you softly and whisper messages of loss, regret, love and hope."
~ Triple J
Eva Popov’s debut album Me the Sea and Stars combines honest lyrics and superb musicality to create an intimate journey of songs about loss, Begun as an endeavor to make sense of the fragility of life, this album about loss came full circle when Eva found out she was pregnant. And so with a baby kicking in the belly the album took on a new dimension. With death came birth, and with loss came the discovery of hope. The result is a stunning collection of songs fuelled by powerful imagery and buoyed by warmth, shimmering strings and harmonies. Arranged with the help of Melisa Collins, and Tom Heathcote as well as enlisted guests on trumpet, banjo, saxophone and backing vocals the sound is perfectly full whilst maintaining the delicacy and intimacy so treasured in Eva’s music. Recorded for the most part in a house by the sea, it was finished in bedrooms, backrooms and churches, masterfully captured by songwriter and producer Nick Huggins (Whitley’s Submarine and his own Shipwreck LP amongst many others)
Eva Popov has been writing music and drawing in audiences around Melbourne for years now. This album follows on from her highly acclaimed EP ‘Photos of the Sun’ which won local awards and airplay with its fresh, poetic lyrics and intricate guitar playing. As a warm, live performer she has been invited to play at festivals including Apollo Bay and St. Kilda Festival as well as Melbourne’s many venues. Her musical background is rich and diverse. It included many years of classical piano training before she gathered up the courage to take the songs she’d been writing on guitar to the stage. In 2004 she received a scholarship to go study classical Indian singing in Mumbai. She returned with a sense of life’s fragility and a collection of emotive songs. As she enlisted the help of a band the songs grew with the weaving of violins, mandolin and brittle harmonies. A grant came from Australia Council and Recording began.
The Album has received airplay on Local and National radio, and Eva recently won the Triple J unearthed Fuse Music Award. She performs solo and with a band of musicians including Melisa Collins and Cat Kohn (violin, mandolin, vocals) Luke Richardson (double Bass) and Mark Gretton (drums).
